THE TONGUE OF THE LIMPET

 

Limpets, like cows, are grazing animals. The tongue, shown above, is designed to

scrape (or rasp) algae off the rocks they live on. When the tide is in the limpet

is active, moving away from its home to feed. When the tide goes out, the limpet

returns home. It shows homing behaviour. Below are the marks made by the limpet

tongue when feeding at low tide
